Help us shape Smith Street!

Have your say on the upgrades for one of Darwin city’s major streets.

We want to make improvements to Smith Street, from Knuckey Street to Whitfield Street, to enable safer movement in the space, enhance amenity, and make it a cooler, greener and more dynamic pedestrian hub.

Streetscape works will include:

  • planting more shade trees
  • new micro-mobility (bike and electric scooter) lanes
  • reducing the road width for safer pedestrian crossing
  • additional pedestrian access crossing points
  • relocation of the taxi rank
  • pedestrian benches and rest zones
  • public art
  • reducing the number of on-street parking to make way for more trees, enable active modes of transport like cycling and provide safer crossing points for pedestrians.
  • lighting improvements in the greenspace to improve night safety for pedestrians.

What will remain the same:

  • The total number of disabled parking bays. No bays will be lost, instead they will be relocated, where required.
  • Two-way vehicle passage.
  • CCTV surveillance to support public safety and security.
  • No loss of trees – a recent arboricultural impact assessment has been conducted to inform that trees are in good health and will stay.

There are two design concepts to consider, and we encourage everyone to have their say on what priorities should be considered for the final design.

The project is funded by the Northern Territory Government and delivered by City of Darwin.
