Who is Swimming NT?

Swimming Northern Territory (NT) is the Peak Sporting Body for the sport of swimming in the Northern Territory. They have 9 member clubs in the NT, and are closely linked with Master’s Swimming Northern Territory which has another 4 clubs. Combined, they have over 1,000 members, with the vast majority living in the Darwin Citty area.

What swimming organisations are based at Parap Pool?

Darwin Swim Club and Darwin Stingers Masters Swim Club and Darwin Water Polo Clubs are based at Parap Pool; however, other schools and local community groups also regularly hire lanes at the facility.

    Why Parap Pool?

Parap Pool is the only World Aquatics compliant facility in Darwin, making it the designated pool for swimming competitions and events. It also caters for a range of programs and activities for all ages and abilities, including learn-to-swim, aqua aerobics, squad training and water polo.

Why is the new building necessary?

The proposed gym facilities will improve the dry-land training and activation area for all Swimming NT members and user group participants. Dry-land activities are an essential component of swimmer strength training and development, and dedicated facilities are lacking in the Territory.

Will the public be able to use the facility?

No, this will not be a public gym.

Will the facility include change rooms?

No, there is sufficient toilets and change rooms on site to cater for large events and activities.

Will the facility be used at night?

The facility will only be used during public opening times or during occasional after-hours user group bookingsto no later than 9pm.

Will this project increase the number of users of Parap Pool?

This training facility is hoped to attract more frequent visits by training squads, both from interstate and potentially overseas.  It is not expected to increase the number of individual swimmers at Parap.

    Who is funding this project?

Funding is being sought by Swimming Northern Territory.

Where exactly will it be built?

The new facility will be located on the eastern side of the Parap Pool complex, over the disused netball courts.

When is construction expected to start and finish?

Planning and design are underway. If approved, the goal is to have construction completed by the end of the Dry Season.

Will the public still be able to use the pool during construction?

Yes. Disruption is expected to be minimal, as utility connections are close by and plans aim to maintain normal pool operations.

What is the current status of the project?

Council has provided in-principle support for the proposal subject to:

    1. stakeholder and community engagement outcomes
    2. funding confirmation
    3. detailed design and technical specifications, including accessibility elements and service upgrades
    4. financial planning for ongoing maintenance and renewal.

    What happens next?

After community consultation, we’ll review all feedback and share the outcomes with the community.
