Consultation has concluded
Dog parks are a great, free resource that every community should have. Not only do they provide a safe and secure space for our four legged friends to exercise, but they also play a huge role in our own socialisation, mental health and physical exercise.
There are over 8000 dogs registered in Darwin and only 1 fenced space for them to exercise. We get a lot of community requests for more dog parks in Darwin and we're pleased to be delivering one in partnership with the Northern Territory Government.
Exercising and socialising dogs is one of the best ways to keep dogs happy and reduce nuisance barking and nuisance behaviour, which is often a key concern in the Darwin community. There are a lot of off the leash areas around the municipality but being off the leash doesn't work for a lot of pooches. The new dog park provides a dedicated space to exercise dogs and is another step towards Council's goal of ensuring dogs and their owners and neighbours live together in safety and harmony in the Darwin community.
Location
The Dog Park will be located next to the Lakeside Drive Community Garden. This Dog Park has been discussed previously as a part of the Lakeside Drive Masterplan. The location was chosen as an ideal place to deliver a dog park as it meets the following requirements;
Adequate parking
Toilet facilities
Open surveillance
Central location
No adjacent properties
Good connection to walking trails and pathways
Construction
Construction is underway for the Lakeside Drive Dog Park, works are expected to be complete by Christmas 2020
The dog park will feature:
1500mm chain mesh fencing with access gates
Separate small and large dog exercise areas
Dog water troughs
Dog disposal bags
40 shaded trees
Community Feedback
Thank you for the feedback on the concept design. The feedback is being used to update and finalise the design for construction of the dog park mid-year. To read the consultation report click here
