In March 2018, Cyclone Marcus caused enormous damage to trees and vegetation, with public open spaces hit particularly hard and clean-up work still continuing.

The natural environment is extremely important to the Darwin community and City of Darwin wants to ensure the future planting and re-establishment is successful in delivering the best outcomes for the Darwin community.

City of Darwin is forming a Tree Re-establishment Advisory Committee with the expertise to guide the selection of tree species and planting requirements for Council and the broader community. The Panel will be made up of representatives from selected organisations and two community members.

The Tree Re-establishment Advisory Committee will:

  • Consider literature on cyclone resilient trees
  • Recommend trees not to be planted in re-planting programs
  • Recommend preferred resilient tree species for planting
  • Advise best practice methods of tree propagation, planting and protection

City of Darwin invited Expressions of Interest for two community members to be appointed to the Tree Re-establishment Advisory Committee. Fifteen applications have been received which are currently being considered. Community members shall be chosen for their expertise, experience, dedication and commitment to the purpose of the group.
